Industrialism
An economic system built on manufacturing industries.
Enclosure Movement
Wealthy farmers bought land from small farmers, benefiting from farming huge tracts of land. The enclosure movement led to improved crop production, such as the rotation of crops.
Cottage System
System in which merchants delivered raw materials to crafts people in their homes and then picked up the finished product.
Barter
exchange (goods or services) for other goods or services without using money.
Inventions
to originate or create a product of one’s own ingenuity,
Entrepreneurs
individuals who start new businesses, introduce new products, and improve management techniques.
Urbanization
Growth of cities..moving of people from rural to cities
Tenements
multi-story building divided into crowded apartments
Capitalism
individuals NOT government control production
Socialism
the government owns the means of production
Communism
the government owns all the means of production and controls economic planning - authoritarian socialism
Karl Marx
Prussian-born philosopher, economist, sociologist, journalist, and revolutionary socialist. His theories are collectively known as Marxism.
Laissez-Faire
Belief that argues government should not interfere with business affairs
