Policy where strong nation seeks to dominate other countries politically, socially, and economically.
Racism

Direct Rule
European nation controlled government at all levels in its colony. Believed Africans incapable of ruling themselves. Varied among the different European colonies. Followed policies of assimilation.
Indirect Rule
A British governor and council of advisers made laws for each colony.
King Leopold II
King of Belgium - encouraged exploration of Central Africa - became infamous ruler of the Congo Free State until 1908.
Congo Free State
Area in Central Africa ruled by King Leopold II. Convinced Europeans he was involved in humanitarian work.

Brit-American explorer, searched for Dr. Livingstone. Helped King Leopold II est Congo Free State
