What jobs were children expected to do?
- Mining
- Working in factores (repairing and sweeping beneath machines)
- Servants/maids
- Farmers
What was life like in the factories?
Very dangerous- children were made to sweep under machines whilst they were still in use. Many people were injured and died, including the loss of limbs and fingers.
Harsh Punishments- Children and some adults were often beaten if they were not on task.
Working hours were very long, between 12-15 hours a day.
What were towns like in the 19th Century?
Overcrowding, lots of people moved to the city to work in the factories.
Lots of crime on the streets.
Dirty water and sewages carried waterborne diseases such as Cholera.
Shared toilets.
Disease spread very quickly, due to everyone being so cramped together.
How long were the working hours in factories?
Anywhere between 12-15 hours on working days.
What is a Pauper Apprentice?
A Pauper Apprentice was a child orphan, who was sent to work in a factory.
