Industrial Manufacture Flashcards
Describe in-house production.
All production takes place within the company, rather than outsourcing.
What are the two methods of industrial cutting?
- Band knives: Require an operated and the pattern pieces to be shown using a dye or sheet marker.
- Computer controlled cutting machine: Fully automated, uses lasers, water, or blades, has the lay plan saved on its system.
What are the three methods of grading?
- Hand/Manual Grading.
- Grading Machine.
- Computer Aided Grading.
What does a lay plan ensure?
- All pattern pieces are cut out.
- The pattern pieces are arranged to minimise wastage.
- The pattern pieces will be cut on the correct grain.
- The pattern of the fabric is taken into account. It is symmetrical across the centre of the garment and matches at the seams.
What is a basic block?
A basic block is the starting point for producing a pattern. It has no features such as pockets or pleats and conforms to BSI standard sizing.
A basic block is reusable and altering one is quicker and cheaper than drawing a pattern from scratch.
Describe vertical production.
A vertically integrated company owns all aspects of their supply, production, and distribution chain. The company can control everything from raw materials to final assembly.
An example is American Apparel.
