Industrial Chemistry Flashcards
Redox titration
Using a redox reaction (rather than, e.g., a neutralisation reaction) to determine the concentration of a solution.
Primary standard
Solution with accurately
know concentration. Prepared by
dissolving a measured amount of solute in a known
volume of solvent.
Equilibrium
Refers to the situation when the forward reaction has the same rate as the backward reaction when we have a reversible reaction. Note that this does NOT mean “nothing is happening”, both reactions ARE occurring.
Haber process
Method of producing ammonia from hydrogen and nitrogen.
Conditions required for Haber process
Temperature of 450 degrees centigrade, pressure of 200 atmospheres, iron catalyst.
Importance of Haber process
Produces ammonia which is required to make fertilizers which are essential to intensive food production.
