Induction System Flashcards
What are the 2 types of induction systems?
Naturally Aspirated
&
Forced Induction
What is an Air Scoop?
The air scoop directs ram air to the fuel metering unit through the air filter
What are the 3 types of Air Filters?
Screen Wire
Paper
Polyurethane Foam
Is carburetor heat air filtered or unfiltered?
Unfiltered
What are the 3 types of icing?
Impact ice
Fuel evaporation ice
Throttle ice
What is the purpose of forced induction?
Allows sea level power to be maintained to a higher altitude
What is critical altitude?
Altitude at which an engine will no longer produce max continuous HP at max continuous RPM
What is a supercharger?
An air pump used to increase pressure of air going into the cylinders
(Builds pressure inside the engine’s induction system)
What does an internal system supercharger do?
Compresses the fuel/air mixture after the carburetor or fuel metering unit
What does an external system supercharger do?
Compresses the air charge before the carburetor or fuel metering unit
What is the main purpose of a supercharger?
Increase volumetric efficiency of the engine
What is a stage?
A change in compression
(Single stage
Two stage
Single speed
Two speed)
What is used to change the speed of the impeller in a Two Speed?
Oil Pressure
What type of supercharger is engine-driven?
Supercharger
What type of supercharger is driven by exhaust gases?
Turbochargers
What are the 3 main parts of a turbocharger?
Compressor assembly
Turbine assembly
Pump & bearing casing
What controls the amount of exhaust gas that flows through the turbine?
The Waste Gate
What does the intercooler do?
Decreases the temperature of compressed air to prevent detonation
What does the differential controller do?
Senses pressure before & after the throttle plate
and controls waste gate at part throttle
What does the density controller do?
Senses pressure before the throttle valve and controls waste gate at full throttle
What does the waste gate actuator do?
Controls position of waste gate using oil pressure
What is overboost?
Exceeding max MAP
(Detrimental to engine life)
What is overshoot?
Momentarily exceeding desired MAP
What is bootstrapping?
Variation in engine power that causes turbocharger output to vary when waste gate is fully closed
