Induction Drugs Flashcards
Volume of Distribution
high 0.6L/kg - indicates large distribution, probably lipophilic
low 0.4L/kg - indicates poor distribution, probably hydrophilic
Protein Binding
changes only significant if drug is more than 90% protein bound
caution in renal, liver, 3rd trimester of pregnancy, malnutrition patients
Induction Receptors
ketamine - NMDA (glutamate)
precedex - alpha 2 presynaptic
all others - GABA
pain on injection
propofol, valium, etomidate, Ativan (small)
induction drugs _____ cerebral metabolic rate
decrease, except ketamine increases
induction drugs _____ cerebral blood flow
decrease, except ketamine increases
induction drugs _____ intracranial pressure
decrease, except ketamine increases
induction drugs _____ cerebral perfusion pressure
decrease, except ketamine increases
induction drugs cardiovascular
depression: propofol>etomidate, precedex
ketamine increase co, hr and bp
induction drugs respiratory
depression: propofol>etomidate
precedex has no depression
ketamine maintains reflexes, respirations, and bronchodilates, does increase secretions
ketamine
analgesic, nystagmus, increased intra-ocular pressure, increases muscle tone, bronchodilator, increased hr, increased bp, maintain airway reflexes, emergence delirium
“dissociative anesthetic”
Etomidate
inhibits 11 beta-hydroxylate which inhibits cortisol and aldosterone secretion
inhibits ALA dehydrates which promotes the formation of heme
*cannot give to patients with porphyria
induction drugs _____ emetic effect
etomidate = increase
ketamine = increase
propofol, precedex = decrease
benzos = minimal
induction drugs that have analgesic properties
ketamine
precedex
precedex metabolism
