Induction drugs Flashcards
Dissociative anesthetics
ketamine, tiletamine
Barbituates
thiopental
Imidazole derivatives
etomidate
neurosteriods
alphaxalone
Ketamine CV effects
increases HR and contractility
if catecholamine stores are depleted or under anesthesia -> neg inotropic effect may dominate
Ketamine resp effects
minimal
Ketamine CNS effects
increase intercerebral volume and pressure
DONT USE IN HEAD TRAUMA CASES
Indications of Ketamine
hypovolemic shock, asthma, aggressive animals
Contraindications of Ketamine
brain trauma or tumor
perforating eye injury
hcm
epilepsy
Telazole
contains tiletamine (similar to ketamine) and zolazepam (benzo effect is similar to diazepam-ketamine, but telazol is longer acting
Propofol onset and duration, route
fast onset short duration
IV only
no accumulation
Propofol CV effects
vasodilation/hypotension neg inotropy (mild)
Propofol resp effects
RR decreases
apnea possible
Tidal volume decreases
does NOT inhibit laryngeal movement
Propofol CNS effects
Intracerebral blood volume and ICP decreases
cerebral vasocontriction
Short, Middle, and Long acting barbituates
short- thiopentol
middle- pentobarbital (euthanasia)
long- phenobarbitol
