Indoor Air Quality Flashcards
What are the factors affecting Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)?
- Nature of ambient air
- Infiltration rate or AER
- Materials present
- Activities (e.g cafe)
What are some types of indoor air pollutants?
- Pollutant gases (Ozone, NO2, SO2)
- Particulate Matter (PM2.5, PM10)
Where do Nitrogen Oxides come from?
- High temperature combustion processes
- Oxidation of nitrogen in air or fuel
What is the source of NOx and what does it involve?
- Road traffic
- Power stations
- Heating plants
- Industrial Processes
Involves: NOx: NO and NO2
What are some health effects of NO2?
- Irritation of lungs
- Lower resistance to respiratory infections (influenza)
- In children: increased incidence of acute respiratory illness
Factors: What is meant by nature of ambient air?
Outdoors around the building.
Exchanges takes place, indoor influence by outdoor air.
What are some properties of Ozone?
- Produced through photochemical process using UV radiation
- Can only be produced outdoors
- Indoor generation of ozone by:
a) copying machines
b) electrostatic precipitators - Ambient levels = 5 - 15 μg/m3
- I/O usually smaller than 1
Factors: What does the infiltration rate or AER depend on?
- Site and design of building:
a) tightly sealed
b) insulated
c) open design
Factors: How do materials/polymers affect IAQ?
- Produce formaldehyde (HCHO)
- Cont. Supply HCHO
- Sources of VOCs
Where do VOCs come from in indoor air?
- emitted from construction materials:
a) wood composites
b) insulating foams
c) floor tiles
d) carpet
e) adhesives
What VOCs are emitted from construction materials?
- Aromatic & Aliphatic
- VOCs (acetic & formic)
- Formaldehyde
- Chlorinated compounds
- Acetone
- Chloroform
From what consumer products do VOCs come from?
- Latex paint
- cleaning agents
- household solvents
- detergents
- waxes
What does latex paint contain?
a) toluene
b) ethylbenzene
c) 2-propanol
d) butanone
Where is formaldehyde present and under what concentrations?
10 - 200 μgm-3
1. resins (plywood)
2. wall papers
3. plastics
4. foams (as insulating materials)
What activities occur within a building?
- Combustion for heating and cooking
- Cleaning:
a) mechanical
b) cleaning aids
