Suharto
He was the first president of Indonesia. He played a pivotal role in the country’s independence from the Netherlands demonstrated an allegiance to the Indonesia Communist party towards the end of his term. He was later overthrown in a coup led by his then-general and successor.
Sukarno
This island – the fifth-largest in Indonesia and the thirteenth-largest in the world – acts as the political, economic and cultural center of the country.
Java
This is the largest and easternmost province of Indonesia. Its entire eastern border is shared by another country.
Papua
This is the term given to Indonesia’s national ideology, which believes in “a divinity that is an ultimate unity.” While it doesn’t prescribe to a particular religion, it does favor monotheism.
Pancasila
This Indonesian island was once home to a now-extinct species in the genus Homo. This species, whose scientific name is partially derived from that of the island, are sometimes nicknamed “hobbits.”

This is the largest island that is located entirely in Indonesia and the sixth-largest in the world
Sumatra
This island is home to most of Indonesia’s hindu minority. Tourism-related business makes up 80% of its economy.
Bali
This band, one of the most famous in Indonesia history, was arrested in in 1965 for performing Beatles covers.

This term is given to a genre of music, as well as the ukelele-style instrument that dominates the genre’s sound.
