'90s Grunge Flashcards
This Seattle band’s early work, in particular their single “Touch Me I’m Sick” and Superfuzz Bigmuff EP, were massively influential on the local scene.
Mudhoney
This record label achieved fame in the late 1980s for signing Nirvana, Soundgarden and Mudhoney and is often accredited with popularizing grunge music.
Sub Pop
This band was very popular in the Seattle music scene from 1987-1990. Their frontman Andrew Wood, however, died before the release of their debut album, ending their chances at success. The band also included eventual Pearl Jam members Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard.
Mother Love Bone
This Washington band fronted by Mark Lanegan broke out with the release of their 1992 album Sweet Oblivion, which included the hit single “Nearly Lost You.”
Screaming Trees
This grunge supergroup only released one album – 1995’s Above – and featured members of Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam and Screaming Trees.
Mad Season
This Washington band, founded by guitarist/vocalist Buzz Osbourne, was a key influence not only in the grudge movement but sludge metal as well.
Melvins
This Australian rock band, which has won more ARIA awards than any other artist in history, had a grunge style on their debut album but branched out in other directions on subsequent releases.
Silverchair
This band, led by vocalist/guitarist J Mascis, is best known for their distinctive guitar sound that harkens back to classic ’60s/’70s sounds but uses heavy feedback and distortion.
Dinosaur Jr
This L.A. band’s debut album Pretty On The Inside was produced by Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon.
Hole

L7
While this Seattle band never saw commercial success, it pioneered the grunge music genre. Some of its members went on to be in Pearl Jam and Mudhoney.
Green River
While not an outright grunge band, this Gibby Haynes-led San Antonio outfit’s unique sound produced a number of grinding, slower-paced songs that could be considered to be a precursor to the genre.
Butthole Surfers
This Fort Worth rock act’s debut album – which included hit single “Possum Kingdom” – has been described as “distinctly grunge” and “distinctly Texan.”
