Individuals affected by discrimination + impact on individuals Flashcards

1
Q

Who does discrimination affect?

A

Discriminatory practice can affect anyone within a health, social care or child care environment, not just service users. For example, hospital workers could be subject to discriminatory practices from their supervisors, from patients or patients’ families. Someone applying for a role in a nursery may be the subject of discrimination as a result of their age, gender or ethnicity

Q

Who is affected by discriminatory practises?

A
  • Individuals who require care and support - including patients in a hospital, elderly residents in a care home setting, disabled children in a school or nursery, etc. are the most likely to experience discrimination and abuse because they are vulnerable.
  • Family, friends or other relatives of those individuals - parents, children, siblings, etc. could all either experience discrimination themselves or be affected by the discrimination against their loved ones.
  • Practitioners - such as nurses, GPs, counsellors, care workers, etc. could all experience discrimination or abuse from patients, their families, or from colleagues and senior workers.

Q

What is the impact on individuals?

A

The impacts of discrimination and abuse on individuals can be wide ranging and relate to all four PIES needs. There can be an impact on their physical development if the person is injured or harmed as a result of abuse or neglect. There can also be intellectual impacts if the individual is not mentally stimulated. Emotional impacts can result from verbal abuse or intimidation, causing a lack of self-esteem, or depression. There is also the social impact as the individual may become withdrawn and not join in with their usual social activities or may be actively excluded from these activities as a result of this discrimination

Q

How does disempowerment impact the individual?

A

This is where an individual has, or feels they have, a lack of control over their life; they feel unwanted and unimportant, causing them to disengage with life. It can lead to an individual just accepting whatever happens to avoid conflict and completely losing independence
