Q

For this type of discriminatory practise and example case study, state what effect this would have on the individual involved:

Stereotyping - John has applied and been accepted for a job as a midwife in a hospital. Several of his colleagues say that because he is a man, he would not be good at the role and won’t be very nurturing or caring

A

John might begin to feel like he is not very good at his job and lose confidence in his ability. It would make him feel like he does not fit in and lead him to believe the patients won’t respect his views. He doesn’t want to ask his colleagues questions as he thinks they will see him as incompetent

Q

For this type of discriminatory practise and example case study, state what effect this would have on the individual involved:

Prejudice - Amirah often takes her son, Asim, to the local children’s centre so he can socialise with other children. Asim has autism and sometimes gets distressed and cries or screams when he does not understand something. Some of the other parents tell their children not to play with him. Amirah even overheard one parent say to the care worker that she is worried Asim will bite her daughter

A

Amirah will be upset that her son is being treated differently because of his condition. She will worry that other children won’t play with him as the parents’ views will rub off on the children. She will be angry that the parents are making these judgements about her son

Q

For this type of discriminatory practise and example case study, state what effect this would have on the individual involved:

Labelling - Toby is 6 years old and has ADHD. As a result of this he finds it difficult to stay focused in school, sitting still and getting along with other children. His teacher tells him off in front of the class and says that he is a ‘naughty’ child and is always misbehaving and not working properly

A

Toby may feel like he is being singled out because of his ADHD. The other children will not want to play with him if they think he is naughty and will get them into trouble or hurt them. Toby will feel the teacher does not understand him and may give up trying to join in with the lesson activities

Q

For this type of discriminatory practise and example case study, state what effect this would have on the individual involved:

Bullying - Fahrooq is a thirteen year old boy who attends Forest Green youth centre. He has Tourette’s syndrome which means he experiences vocal and physical tics. The other children who attend the centre are constantly calling him names and often don’t let him join in with the activities they play

A

He is likely to feel isolated and alone if he has no-one to play with or interact with in the youth centre. He will probably no longer wish to attend or become quite withdrawn while he is there. He could feel depressed as a result

Q

For this type of discriminatory practise and example case study, state what effect this would have on the individual involved:

Abuse - Hailey is spending a few nights in hospital following an operation on her gall bladder. She has been stuck in bed for several nights and her bedsheets have not been changed once. The night shift nurses also often don’t give her any water overnight and take away her food before she has finished it

A

She will feel really upset and angry that she is not receiving the correct treatment from the nurses. She might feel helpless if she feels she cannot do anything about the abuse/neglect

Q

For this type of discriminatory practise and example case study, state what effect this would have on the individual involved:

Being patronising - Elena is 74 years old and attends Red Cedars care home. She has dementia but is still quite independent. One of the care workers, Graham, is always calling her ‘my love’ and ‘dear’. He cuts up the food on her plate for her even though she can do this herself

A

Elena may experience a lack of self-esteem as she is being treated like a child by Graham. She will begin to feel like she has no control over her life and this will make her really low and upset
