What is a sensory impairment?
A sensory impairment refers to a condition that affects one or more of the senses, which can include sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell. Individuals with sensory impairments may experience difficulties in perceiving and processing sensory information from their environment.
For example:
- Visual Impairment: This can range from partial sight to complete blindness, affecting the ability to see and interpret visual information.
- Hearing Impairment: This includes varying degrees of hearing loss, which can impact communication and the ability to hear sounds in the environment.
- Tactile Impairment: This affects the sense of touch, making it hard to feel sensations on the skin, which can influence how a person interacts with objects and their environment.
Sensory impairments can significantly impact a person’s ability to engage with the world around them, and adaptations may be necessary to support their learning and communication needs.
