Individual Differences-Griffiths Gambling Flashcards
What was the method that was used for the gambling study?
15 regular gamblers and 15 non gamblers were given £3 and were instructed to try and play on a fruit machine in a casino, staying on it for at least 60 plays. Half the participants were also asked to think aloud, and their thoughts were recorded and analysed. After this all of the participants were interviewed and questioned on their beliefs on the role of skill I’m gambling
What was the aim of the gambling study??
The aims of the study were to identify the differences in skill between gamblers and non-gamblers, and look at the rational and irrational beliefs in it
What were the results of the gambling study?
Very little evidence was found that skill had a role in gambling, or that differences in “skill” had any effect on their winnings.
However regular gamblers said more irrational things than non-regular gamblers, and showed a greater belief in skill being needed to be good at gambling.
What conclusions were therefore drawn from this study?
There is no difference in skill between regular and non-regular gamblers. However, regular gamblers hold different beliefs in skill I’m gambling to non-regular gamblers.
Who were the participants of the Gambling study?
There were 60 participants overall, 30 non regular gamblers and 30 regular gamblers. 44 were male and 16 were female, the mean age of the group being 23-24 years old.
What type of experiment was the gambling study?
It was a field experiment, as the study was taken place in a an actual casino, meaning that the researchers could observe a much more realistic situation, and make it more ecological valid and generalisable, even if it meant not having as much control as they would in a lab.
