Indirect speech (estilo indirecto) Flashcards
Indirect speech, also called ‘reported speech’, reports what was said without using the exact words of the speaker. What was said becomes a subordinate clause, usually joined by the conjunction “que”.
“I can’t come tomorrow.” becomes
No puedo venir mañana
He said he couldn’t come the next day.
Dijo que no podía venir al día siguiente.
In changing from direct to indirect speech, certain elements change:
the reference of the people involved (personal pronouns, possessive pronouns):
I can ( present ) becomes I could ( imperfect )
“Yo no puedo” becomes Él no podía.
time references (verbs, adverbs):
puedo (present) becomes podía (imperfect)
tomorrow becomes the/the next day
mañana becomes el/al día siguiente
place references (demonstratives, adverbs or phrases of place):
here becomes there
aquí becomes allí
