INDIRECT REALSIM Flashcards
Support for Locke’s primary secondary distinction
primary qualities remaining the same beyond human perception
P1- if you continually divide an object the parts must retain the primary qualities even when they are too small to be perceived
c- therefore primary qualities must exist mind independently
ideas cannot be like material objects.
P1- my idea for a tree has certain sensible qualities.
p2-but these sensible qualities depend on the mind
p3- to say my idea of a tree resembles a physical mind independent tree, is incoherent. it is like saying that something invisible can represent something visible.
p4- ideas are also fleeting and changing, whereas objects are not.
c1- thus anything outside the mind cannot have any such qualities
c2- it follows that the very idea of a material object cannot be like or resemble my idea of it.,
