Dualism Flashcards
outline Descarte’s divisibility argument
P1. the body is divisible
P2. the mind is indivisible
C. these are therefore distinct
Relies on Leibniz law, suggesting if two different things have the exact same properties, then they are the same. However these have different properties, therefore they are not the same.
Outline Descartes conceivability argument
P1. i can clearly and distinctly recognise the nature of two things to be different, then they must be different
P2. i can clearly and distinctly recognise that the nature of my mind is purley conscious and nothing more
P3. i can clearly and distinctly recognise that the nature of my body is purely physical and nothing more.
c. therefore my mind and my body are distinct.
since descartes can clearly and distinctly recognise the distinct natures of his mind and body, they must be distinct substances.
The masked man falacy
P1.i have a clear and distinct idea of batman being a masked crusader
P2. i have a clear and distinct idea of bruce wayne being a millionaire playboy
C. therefore batman is not bruce wayne
