- health care system
- education system
- community infrastructure
- resource and capacity
- environmental stewardship
- cultural continuity
Indigenous: distal SDoH
represents political, economic and social context
- racism and social exclusion
- colonialism
- self-determination
Cultural competence
- ability to understand and communicate effectively with people across cultures
- foundation to a person learning. A starting place as a nurse. It involves self-examination
Cultural Safety
Nurses role:
An environment where all people feel respected and safe when interacting with health care.
Nurses role:
- power recognition and shift: there is a power balance, shift the power to the client. Ask how I can provide better care?
- health advocacy- become and ally and an advocate
Cultural humility
acknowledge people are unique no matter what culture they come from. Just because you understand a culture, you do not know the person
- culture is dynamic, be open to changes and learning new information (life-long learner)
Indigenous reconciliation as Nurses
- prime position in health care (often first point of contact)
- establish trusting relationships
- be aware of your own assumptions/biases
- be open to learning
- acknowledge limitations
- Equitable care
- be an ally
