Little crow CAUSES

A

1861, crops failed and food promised by the government did not arrive on the Sioux reservation. The Indians were starving.

A

August 1862 Little crow and his followers attacked the agency that ran the reservation.
They stole food, burned down agency buildings and killed many US soldiers.

October 1862 many Sioux were surrendered or captured. They were moved to a small reservation called crow creek. Many Sioux died in the cold winter.

Sand Creek Massacre CAUSES

A

The Cheyenne on the sand creek reservation because of crop failures. they started to attack wagon trains and steal food. they did not harm travellers. Their leader was called black kettle. after three years of attacks black kettle and the government came to an agreement. Black kettle thought him and his men were safe.

A

November 1864 Cornel Chivington led a dawn raid on sand creek. over 100 Indians were killed even though they waved a white flag.

A

Black kettle escaped and told other tribes what happened. Indians trusted white men even less. It led to more attacks on whites. The us govt. carried out an investigation on what happened, and Chivington was told off for his actions.

A

The discovery of gold on the Sioux lands led to minors and settlers crossing their hunting grounds on the new Bozeman trail. This broke the 1851 fort Laramie treaty.

A

The Sioux attacked the travellers but weren’t strong enough to attack forts. Red Cloud had talks with the US government but he stormed out when he found out they were planning to build forts along the trail. White Soldiers were killed by the Sioux and they blocked the trail.

1876-77 The Great Sioux War

A

A white military expedition to protect railway surveyors and gold prospectors in the black hills started a war with the Sioux. [the whites were breaking the second fort Laramie treaty] The government made an offer to buy the black hills for 6mil but the Sioux rejected the offer and some left the reservation in protest. The Sioux were told they had to return to the reservations but couldn’t because of the snow.

A

On 25th June 1876 Custer attacked an Indian camp and lost as he was outnumbered and didn’t wait for backup.

In short term it was an Indian success, however the defeat shocked the white Americans, who demanded more military campaigns against the Indians, and wanted revenge for Custer’s death.
The Sioux were forced to sell the black hills and give up their weapons and live under military rule. Led to the battle of wounded knee
