Independence And Adaptation Flashcards
What do plants compete for?
Remember that plants make their own food using photosynthesis, so they do not compete for food. Here are some of the things that plants do compete for: light water space mineral salts
What do animals compete for?
- food
- water
- space
What is adaptation?
Organisms are adapted to survive in different conditions. Over many generations, these adaptations have come about through variation. Variation involves small changes between organisms which may allow that organism to compete better for survival. Variation can have environmental or genetic causes.
What is an extremophile?
a microorganism that lives in conditions of extreme temperature, acidity, alkalinity, or chemical concentration.
Why is camouflage important?
Survival
How can lichens be used as air pollution indicators?
Lichens grow in many different forms, if the lichen is crusty this is because crusty lichens love well in polluted areas
How can invertebrate animals be used as water pollution indicators?
Water pollution is caused by the discharge of harmful substances into rivers, lakes and seas. Many aquatic invertebrate animals cannot survive in polluted water, so their presence or absence indicates the extent to which a body of water is polluted.
Why are bees important?
All sorts of fruit and vegetables are pollinated by honey bees, such as broccoli and squash, apples and almonds. Pollination is not just important for the food we eat directly, it’s vital for the foraging crops, such as field beans and clover and to also feed the livestock we depend on for meat
