Independant Behaviour Flashcards
What is a dissenter?
Someone who does noes agree with the rest of the group, making it un unanimous
Which study supports the idea that a dissenter makes it easier to resist the pressure of a group?
Asch’s study - when groups of confederate were unanimous there was a conformity of 32%, but a dissenter dropped conformity to 5%
What is the effect an incorrect but different view from the majority?
Still reduces conformity - unanimity of the group is still broken
What evidence supports the idea that a smaller group size makes minority influence easier?
A variation of asch’s study - 6 confederate majority had a conformity of 32%, but a 2 confederate majority had a conformity rate of 12.8%
What evidence supports the explanation that a disobedience ally makes it easier to resist authority?
Variation of Milgram’s study - when 2 confederate teachers also refused to carry on with shocks, obedience reduced from 65% to 10%
What is legitimate authority?
The deeply planted belief in what authority looks and sounds like
How does reducing legitimate authority happen?
By recognising that people are equal to us and that dressing and acting a certain way doesn’t make them more powerful than us
What evidence supports the idea that reducing legitimate authority helps to resist authority?
A variation of Milgram’s study, where the location moved from Yale university to a seedy office. Obedience went from 65% to 48% and to 20% when the experience donned everyday clothes instead of a lab coat
What evidence supports feeling responsible as a situational factor increasing indépendant behaviour?
A variation of Milgram where the learner was in the same room as the participant. Obedience dropped from 65% to 40% because they felt more responsible for their actions.
What four steps can we take to resist obedience?
Ask if we would do this without order. Beware the foot in the door. Find an ally. Take responsibility.
