Ethics In Social Psychology Flashcards
Why did Baumrind accuse Milgram’s study of deception?
Participants were deceived on 3 counts - they were told the study was about memory, the shocks were real and the confederate was another participant
Why did Baumrind accuse Milgram’s study of putting participants in harm?
Many participants showed signs of extreme stress - trembling, stuttering and sweating. Also, there could be long term effects from guilt of giving potentially lethal shocks
Why did Baumrind accuse Milgram’s study of not following the principle of freedom to withdraw?
Ps were given cues such as ‘you have no other choice but to continue’ if they talked about withdrawing
How did Milgram defend counts of deception?
Without the deception the study couldn’t have taken place. Good cost-benefit analysis. Guilt wasn’t expected as psychiatrists hypothesised 0.01% would go to 450V
How did Milgram defend counts of psychological harm?
He argued Ps were fully debriefed and reassured that their behaviour was normal. Only 1.3% reported negative feelings. Psychiatric follow up a year later showed no signs of damage.
How did Milgram defend himself against counts of no rights to withdraw?
By persuading Ps to remain he was demonstrating the power of authority figures, but they weren’t psychically detained and 35% resisted and left before reaching the final voltage
On what three counts did Savin criticise Zimardo’s prison study?
Fully informed consent (Ps didn’t consent to police and delousing or punishments)
Protection from harm (humiliation and dehumanisation of prisoners, guilt of guards)
Right to withdraw (one prisoner asked to leave, felt unable to. Told other prisoners this)
How did Zimbardo defend his study having fully informed consent?
He held debriefing sessions, and argued that they did sign a consent form but police arrangements were last minute to create realistic experience
How did Zimbardo defend his study having protection from harm?
Contact maintained with Ps to prevent negative effects persisting, plus Zimbardo didn’t realise the adverse effects in planning it
How did Zimbardo defend his study having right to withdraw
Ps were informed of their right to leave, and the Ps believing otherwise was a misunderstanding
