Incontinence Flashcards
beta 3 receptors on bladder wall when innervated cause
relaxation of detrusor
alpha 1 on smooth muscle of internal sphincter contracts
Urgency incontinence and stress incontinence are both
failure to store urine
overflow incontinence - bladder retains large amount of fluid
failure to empty
- hypotonic bladder -
- outlet obstruction
urgency incontinence is due to an
stress incontinence is due to
overactive bladder
incompetent closure
overactive bladders, urgency incontinence often due to
involuntary contractions, lesions of CNS
how do you check a post void residual?
ultrasound
who is at risk of urinary retention or post void residual
- DM
- neurologic
- large prostate
- elderly
post-void residual testing using ultrasound helps you rule out
overflow incontinence
large volume urinary incontinence post prostatectomy - can be due to
stress incontinence,
sphincter not closing
74 yr old post stroke -
leakage of urine
- involuntary contraction
and urgency incontinence can ensue
stroke initially can lead to
urinary retention for detrusor areflexia
then
detrusor overactivity - neurogenic
overactive bladder with urgency incontinence can be due to
stroke - dementia - tbi - brain tumour - MS low pressure hydrocephalus
how do you treat urgency incontinence and prevent an overactive bladder
anti muscarinic
