What is the Equality Act 2010?
- The Act provides a legal framework to protect the rights of individuals and advance equality of opportunity for all.
- Merged 9 old pieces of legislation
- Requires reasonable adjustments to be made
- All users should be considered when designing new
What are the 9 protected characteristics?
Age Disability Race Sex Religion Sex Sexual orientation Gender
What are reasonable adjustments under the Act?
There is a duty to make reasonable adjustments under the act.
Allow disabled access, retrofitting existing spaces
How is the Act enforced?
Generally by the individuals under the act. Can lead to court injunction to make building changes.
What is part M?
Sets out the minimum standards required under the building regulations in regards to accessability.
Does part M ensure inclusive design?
No, meeting the building regulation will not ensure that inclusive design is met. Could still be taken as a case under the Act.
What is the National Planning Policy Framework?
Identifies the need for planning policy to create safe, inclusive accessible spaces.
