In Utero Mandibular Growth Flashcards
what 3 cartilages have influences of the mandibular bone formation?
- condylar cartilage
- coronoid cartilage
- symphyseal cartilages
when does the condylar cartilage appear?
appears at 12 weeks in utero, occupies most of the developing ramus
the condylar is converted through?
endochondral ossification
what does the condylar provide?
provides through 2nd decade of life for further growth (b/w 20-22 yrs of age)
when does the coronoid cartilage appear?
appears at 4 months in utero
what does the coronoid cartilage provide?
provides for the anterior border and superior most aspects of the coronoid process
what attaches to the coronoid process?
the temporalis muscle
where is the symphyseal cartilage positioned?
positioned b/w the medial aspects of the 2 Meckel’s cartilages
what does the symphyseal cartilage provide?
provides alveolar process at the midline
what is the summary of the symphyseal cartilage?
develops independent of Meckel’s cartilage under secondary cartilage influences
where does the symphyseal cartilage fuse?
it fuses the mandible at the midline
b/w #24 and #25
