In-situ vs Ex-situ Flashcards
What does in-situ conservation refer to?
Protecting an animal or plant within its natural habitat.
Give some examples of in-situ conservation
- protecting the scarlet Ibis in the Caroni Bird Sanctuary
- Protecting the manatee in the Manatee Pond, Manzanilla is done by the Manatee Conservation Trust
- Protecting the Pawi in the Northern Range by the Asa Wright Nature Centre
The difference in meaning between in-situ and ex-situ
In-situ= conserving an animal or plant within its natural habitat Ex-situ= Conserving an animal or plant outside of its natural habitat
Give 3 advantages of In-situ
1) Animal/plant is accustomed to the environment
2) Food is present in its habitat however, it has to hunt and search for it
3) Mates are present for breeding
Give 3 advantages of Ex-situ
1) Animal/ Plant is taken care of eg, zoo personnel monitor animal/plant health and welfare
2) Food is readily provided to animals/plant
3) Animals/plants are safe from predators, and pests, as personnel protect and monitor them.. eg. Manatee conservation trust, Wildfowl trust
Give disadvantages of in-situ
1) Animal/plant is susceptible to predation, disease, pests
2) Difficult to monitor and keep track of individuals as they are free to roam in their natural habitat
Give disadvantages of ex-situ
1) Mates may not be present to breed and have to be transported from one zoo to another to allow breeding
2) only a few individuals can be preserved in ex-situ
3) A lot of money and trained personnel is required to set up and maintain the ex-situ conservation facility eg. zoo, botanic
What does breeding mean
The mating and production of offspring by animals
What are captive breeding programs
they are departments within zoos, rescues, and sanctuaries, where animals are kept in enclosures and are bred to produce future generations of their species
rehabilitation.. what does it mean byach
A program for restoring someone or something to good health
Reintroduction what does it mean man
To introduce animals or plants back into their natural habitat after some sort of rehabilitation
ESA
environmentally sensitive area
ESS
Environmentally Sensitive species
herbarium
Preserve plants (seed/leaves to identify plants)
