Conservation Flashcards
habitats can be preserved by:
- setting aside areas for restricted access and use eg – national nature reserves such as the Aripo Scientific Reserve, Buccoo Reef, Bird of Paradise Island, Central Forest Reserve – Tobago
- setting up of conservation organizations (EMA, ASA Wright Nature Centre, Emperor
Valley Zoo, Pointe A Pierre Wildfowl Trust) etc. - development and enforcing laws that limit the impact of industries eg, via the
Environmental Commission of Trinidad & Tobago
wildlife are protected by:
- game sanctuaries, eg, the Caroni Wildlife Sanctuary and the Bush Bush Wildlife
Sanctuary in the Nariva Swamp - legislation, eg the Conservation of Wildlife Regulations(hunting season).
- Issuing permits to hunters during the hunting season
- Ensuring that animals with low populations cannot be hunted.
What does conservation aim to
- Preserve habitats
- Protect wildlife
- Ensure that natural resources are used sustainably
Define sustainable development
Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability for the future generations to meet their own needs.
How can habitats be reserved
Habitats can be reserved by setting aside areas for restricted access and use. For example, The Aripo Scientific Reserve
The following is info on the Aripo Scientific Reserve
-last remaining area of natural savannah land
in Trinidad
-contains many species of plants that are not
found elsewhere in Trinidad.
Info on the Buccoo Reef (In-situ conservation site)
- located just off the south-west coast of Tobago
- designated a restricted area under the marine Areas Act.
The Birds of Paradise Island- Little Tobago (In-situ conservation site)
-small island of the North East Coast of Tobago
-200 hectares in size
-important breeding site for seabirds in Tobago
-comprises of internationally known species of birds.
such as the laughing gulls and the brown babbies
The Central Forest Reserve, Tobago (In-situ conservation site)
-oldest reserve in the Western hemisphere
State 5 conservation organizations responsible for the environment
1) The Ministry of Public Utilities and the Environment
2) The Environmental Management Authority (EMA)
3) The Emperor Valley Zoo (ex-situ convention)
4) The Asa Wright Nature Centre (in-situ conservation)
5) Point-a-Pierre Wildfowl Trust (ex-situ convention)
What’s another way to protect the habitat
by developing and enforcing laws on the environment
eg. The Environmental Commission of Trinidad and Tobago
How does a new species tend to become extinct in Trinidad
The introduced species can become a problem if there is no predator in that ecosystem to feed on it and control its members. Hence citizens would keep killing them and with nothing to feed on it will eventually become extinct.
Here’s a list of Endangered Species in Trinidad
NEXT SLIDE
Leatherback Turtle
Niche: -Returns to the same nesting site
-Long life span
Threats: -Poaching shells for jewelry, ornaments
-Water/land pollution-oil spills, plastic garbage
on beach
Solution: -Educate the public
-Introduce laws, patrols.eg. Nature seekers
Scarlet Ibis
Niche: -Feed on crustaceans, shellfish, molluscs, insects
and occasionally fruits and seeds
-Social animals; live in flocks
-3-5 eggs are laid
Threats: -Loss of wetlands (habitat destruction)
- Poaching - Overfishing/ removal of food source
Solutions: -Caroni Swamp was designated a
protected area
-Laws, penalties, fines, patrols
-Educate the public
