Carbon Cycle Flashcards
The air around us contains a small amount of
CO2 (carbon dioxide)
this CO2 is used by what during when
plants in photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the only process that
takes CO2 out of the cell (cell respiration)
What is this CO2 during photosynthesis built into
sugars and other complex carbon compounds
After it is built into sugars and complex carbon compounds, what happens
it is converted into C6H12O6 (glucose)
Equation for photosynthesis
carbon dioxide+ water (CO2+H2O)
TO GIVE
sugar+ oxygen (C6H12O6+O2)
Plants are eaten by
(your… im not gonna say it)
animals
(mom)
or animals feed on
other animals
this eating of organisms process is called
feeding
what happens to the sugar during feeding
it gets into the cells in the animal’s body
(sugar into animals’ bodies) this means that
glucose in plants goes to glucose in animals or animal to animal
In cells, the sugar is
broken down into CO2 and water to produce energy
this CO2 and water forming energy process is called
respiration
Therefore, this respiration means that
CO2 is put back into the atmosphere
after this respiration, what is converted into what
C6H12O6 is converted into CO2
Respiration Equation
C6H12O6+O2
INTO
Co2+H2O+ energy (ATP)
what is ATP
a molecule that keeps the energy inside of it so it wouldn’t exist as heat energy
What happens to animals and plants when they die
they decay
In this decaying process, what happens
bacteria and the other decomposers feed on them. They too respire and release CO2 back into the atmosphere
therefore this decaying is another example of the process of
respiration
When decomposers decay the animals, what else happens
the carbohydrates are converted into carbon back into the soil
carbohydrates—>carbon—>soil
this conversion to carbon formula
C6H12O6 into C (glucose to inorganic carbon)
What happens if there is not enough O2
for complete decay, the dead remains pile up and are softened into soft, black peat (eg in bogs and swamps)
What is this lack of oxygen decay done by
bacteria respiring anaerobically
What happens to the peat overtime
it gets buried and hardens into coal (glucose to fossil fuels)
what are formed in a similar way (to the coal) and from what
The other fossil fuels (oil and natural gas) are formed in a similar way from tiny marine organisms sunk to the bottom of the sea
What happens when coal is burned in factories
CO2 is released back into the atmosphere. By man burning coal, the carbon in coal is returned to the atmosphere
Coal is converted to
CO2
this last process is
combustion
