In-Situ and Ex-Situ Conservation Flashcards
What is in-situ conservation?
Within the natural habitat
What is ex-situ conservation?
Out of natural habitat
What does the level of protection depend on?
The conservation status of the species
What does extinct mean?
No organisms of the species exists anywhere in the world
What does extinct in the wild mean?
Organism of the species only exist in captivity
What does endangered mean?
A species in danger of extinction
What does vulnerable mean?
A species considered to likely become endangered in the near future.
What are 2 in-situ conservation methods?
-Wildlife Reserves
-Marine Conservation Zones
How does wildlife reserves work?
-Controlled grazing
-Restricting human access
-Controlling poaching
-Feeding animals
-Reintroduction of species
-Removal of invasive species
How does Marine Conservation Zones work?
-Helping to preserve areas which are species rich
-To stop non-sustainable fishing methods
What are 3 ex-situ conservation methods?
-Botanic Gardens
-Seed Bank
-Captive Breeding Programmes
How do Botanic Gardens work?
Grows plants with the best resources e.g. nutrients
How do Seed Banks work?
-Stores seeds for future
-Is an example of a gene bank (store of genetic material)
How does Captive Breeding Programmes work?
-Breeding in human-controlled environment then may be released into the wild
-Not released into the wild due to:
-Diseases
-Some behaviour
needs to be learnt
