Biodiversity Basics Flashcards
What is biodiversity?
The variety of living organisms in an area
What are species?
A group of similar organisms able to reproduce to giver fertile offspring
What is a habitat?
The area inhabited by a species
What is a biotic habitat?
A living habitat
What is an abiotic habitat?
A non living habitat
Why is biodiversity important?
To maintain balanced ecosystems
What is an ecosystem?
Where all of the biotic and abiotic factors interact
What relates different species?
As all species are interconnected meaning they depend on one another-Interdependence
What may happen in regions of reduced biodiversity?
The connections between species may not be present which eventually harms all species in ecosystem
What are the 4 levels of biodiversity?
-Habitat Diversity
-Species Richness
-Species Evenness
-Genetic Diversity
What is habitat diversity?
The number of different habitats in an area
What is species richness?
The number of different species in an area
What is species evenness?
A measure of the relative abundance of each species in an area
What is genetic diversity?
The variation of alleles within a species
