Cultural capital
Knowledge of attitudes, values, language and abilities that the middle class transmit to their children
Streaming
Separating children into different ability groups or class.
Each class is then taught differently.
Anti-school subcultures
Pupils that are normally placed in lower streams
School has undermined their self worth
Seek to gain a status a different way e.g not king homework or misbehaving
Pro-school subcultures
Pupils placed in high streams.
Tend to be committed to the values of school
Gain status in an approved manner
E.g though academic success
Nike identities
Identify themselves in styles
Consuming branded clothing
Comprehensive schools
State-funded
All abilities
Equal opportunities and social mobility
