  • class: anti-arrhythmic
  • aka Adenocard
  • purpose: administered to convert supraventricular tachycardia (SVT)
  • dose: rapid IV push an an AC IV with an immediate flush (1st dose 6mg, if pt does not convert then 2nd of 12mg)
  • caution: pt must be on cardiac monitor prior to administration, pt must have IV fluids infusing during administration, and a provider must be present during administration

  • class: vasoconstrictor
  • aka oxymetazoline HCL
  • purpose: primarily used at TAUC to treat nose bleeds and nasal congestion
  • dose: stocked in the ENT tote, in a 30 mL spray bottle, and is administered by a provider

Albuterol Sulfate

A
  • class: bronchodilator
  • purpose: it is indicated for the treatment of bronchospasms in pts with cases such as RSV, asthma, COPD, and other respiratory illnesses.
  • dose: 2.5mg/3ml in a solution and given per nebulizer inhalant; can be mixed with ipratropium bromide (Atrovent) and given per inhalation to make a DuoNeb treatment
  • caution: may cause nervousness, tremors, and an increased and/or uneven heart beat

  • class: NSAID
  • purpose: used to prevent blood clots from forming; typically given to pts who may be experiencing a cardiac event
  • dose: 324 mg (4 chewable 81mg tablets)
  • caution: may contribute to increased bleeding in pts who have intestinal bleeding, ulcers, blood clotting disorders, and anemia

    (reconstitution both with NS)
  • caution: if pt has an allergy to penicillin-family based , check with the provider prior to administering medication

  • aka Rocephin
  • purpose: used to treat bacterial infections
  • dose: given IM or IV
    (IM uses lidocaine and IV uses NS for reconstitution); refer to reconstitution chart at TAUC
  • caution: never reconsistute with lidocaine when adding medication to IV fluid, if pt has an allergy to penicillin-family based , check with the provider prior to administering medication

  • caution: may increase blood sugar in diabetic pts, may cause a temporary burning sensation in the neck, groin, or armpits

  • caution: may cause jitteriness and an increase in the pts blood pressure and heart rate- monitor vital signs closely

  • caution: may lead to increased blood sugars in diabetic patients; may lead to sun sensitivity (discourage prolonged sun exposure or tanning beds)

  • class: corticosteroid
  • aka Triamcinolone
  • purpose: reduces the actions of chemicals in the body that cause inflammation
  • dose: 10 mg IM
  • caution: may cause aggression, agitation, and anxiety; may decrease blood sugar in diabetic patients (check with provider before administering)

  • class: NSAID
  • aka Toradol
  • purpose: administered to decrease swelling and/or treat moderate to severe pain
  • dose: 30 mg IM or 15 mg IV
  • caution: may worsen symptoms associated with kidney failure; may increase bleeding

Lorazepam

A
  • class: benzodiazepines; sedative
  • aka Ativan
  • purpose: administered to treat anxiety, muscle spasms, or seizures. This medicine is locked in the Narc Cabinet at TAUC
  • dose: 0.25-2 mg IM or IV
  • caution: may cause drowsiness, slurred speech, and impaired coordination; ensure the pt has a ride home prior to administration

A
  • class: antacid
  • aka aluminum and magnesium hydroxide
  • purpose: administered to neutralize stomach acid
  • dose: 30 mL PO; may be mixed with 10 mL of viscous lidocaine to make a GI cocktail
  • caution: may cause constipation

Morphine

A
  • class: opioid analgesic
  • purpose: administered to pts with moderate to severe pain. This medicine is locked in the Narc Cabinet at TAUC
  • dose: 2-4 slow IV push (over 2.5 minutes) or 2-10mg IM
  • caution: may decrease pts blood pressure and respiratory drive if administered too quickly in IV; ensure the pt has a ride home prior to administration

Metoclopramide

A
  • class: antiemetic
  • aka Reglan
  • purpose: administered to treat severe nausea/vomiting, migraines, and symptoms associated with GERD
  • dose: 10mg IM or IVPB
  • caution: must NOT be administered through IV push as it may cause involuntary muscle movements known as tardive dyskinesia

Naloxone

A
  • class: opioid antagonist
  • aka Narcan
  • purpose: reverses the effect of opioid narcotics. This drug is used for pts with a decreased respiratory drive and altered level of consciousness after an over dose of morphine, heroine, fentanyl, or other opioid derivatives
  • dose: 0.4 mg IV push
  • caution: pushing this medication too quickly may cause opiate withdrawal symptoms such as vomiting or aggressive behavior

Nitristat

A
  • class: vasodilator
  • aka Nitroglycerin
  • purpose: reduces peripheral vascular resistance thereby reducing the workload on the heart. It is administered to pts presenting with angina (chest pain) and is intended to relieve ischemic chest pain associated with heart attacks
  • dose: 1 sublingual tablet (0.4 mg) every 5 minuted until the pt is either pain free or a max of 3 doses have been administered
  • caution: Nitroglycerin is a vasodilator and may decrease the pts heart rate and blood pressure. It should not be administered until an IV has been established and the pts vital signs have been recorded. Retake the pts BP and HR before repeating doses. Wear gloves when handling.

  • class: antiemetic
  • aka Zofran
  • purpose: administered to treat nausea and vomiting
  • dose: 4 mg IV or IM

Orphenadrine

A
  • class: muscle relaxant
  • aka Norflex
  • purpose: used to treat muscle spasms or other musculoskeletal conditions
  • dose: 60 mg IV or IM
  • caution: Orphenadrine has sedative effects; ensure the pt has a ride home prior to administration; do not administer to pts who are allergic to sulfa based medications.

  • class: antihistamine
  • aka Phenergan
  • purpose: administered for itching or hives; can also be administered as an antiemetic to treat nausea and vomiting
  • dose: 12.5-25 mg IM ONLY
  • caution: may cause irritability and drowsiness

  • class: corticosteroid
  • aka methylprednisolone
  • purpose: used to reduce the immune system’s adverse effects on the body
  • dose: 125 mg IM or slow IV push
  • caution: may increase blood sugar in diabetic pts

  • class:
  • aka ampicillin sodium/sulbactam sodium
  • purpose: administered to treat bacterial infections
  • dose: refer to reconstitution chart at TAUC; IVPB ONLY
  • caution: Unasyn, and any other penicillin-family based antibiotics, are contraindicated in pts diagnosed with mononucleosis

Viscous Lidocaine

A
  • class: local anesthetic
  • purpose: Viscous Lidocaine 2% is administered typically to treat pain in the mouth, throat, or esophagus
  • dose: 10 ML PO; either administered by itself or mixed with 30 mL Maalox to make a GI cocktail
  • caution: when given orally, may cause numbing of the lips, mouth, and tongue
