In-depth Knowledge And Understanding Flashcards
Sustainability
Meeting today’s needs without compromising the needs of future generations
Sustainable design
A design strategy which minimises the environmental impact of manufacturing and using the product
What happens if products are disposed of incorrectly?
1) can end up in a land fill site
2)hazardous materials can leak out into the environment.
What is a landfill site ?
A rubbish tip , where waste is simply buried
What factors might a designer face when considering what materials and components to select ?
1)function—what does the component do in the system ?
2)aesthetic—is the look of the material important?
3)environmental—is the product exposed to rain , dirt , sunlight or extreme temperatures
4)availability—does the supplier have sufficient stock for the batch to be manufactured
4)cost
5)social,cultural and ethical issues
Sustainable forest management
involves cultivating trees in a manner that allows forests to regenerate and maintain their biodiversity. This approach ensures the continual supply of raw materials for paper and board production, and encourages forests’ role in carbon sequestration and oxygen production.
Recycling and reusing materials
minimises waste, reduces demand for new materials, and hence promotes sustainability. Choosing materials that are easily recyclable is a good practice
Why should designers always search for materials with low carbon footprints ?
One should also seek out materials with low carbon footprints, which means they do not create a lot of carbon dioxide or other harmful emissions when produced, used, or disposed of.
