Improving Rio's environment Flashcards
What are Rio is traffic congestion problems
Rio is the most congested city and South America this is because of: steep mountains, tunnels that can only be built through the mountains as the mountains are too steep to build roads on, the number of cars in Rio which has grown by 40% in the last decade, high number of crimes which means many feel safer in cars.
What are the solutions to traffic congestion
Solutions are: the expansion of the Metro system under guanabara day, I knew toll road in the centre of the city to reduce congestion, making coast road is one way during rush hour to improve traffic flow.
What is reels issue with water pollution
Guanabara Bay is highly polluted. This causes major threat to world life, commercial fishing has declined by 90% in the last 20 years. There is a danger that the pollution could affect the bays and beaches in Rio which would damage tourism and the local economy. The sources of this pollution is: many of the 55 rivers flowing into the bay are heavily polluted,Rivers are polluted by run-off from open sewers in the favelas, over 200 tons of raw sewage pour into the bays each day, over 50 times of industrial waste and the debate every day, they have been oil spills from the petrolbass oil refinery, ships empty their fuel tanks in the bay because there are no facilities to dispose of the fuel properly.
What are the solutions to Water pollution
12 new sewage works have been built since 2004 at a cost of US$68 million, ships are fine for discharging fuel into the bay illegally, 5 km of new sewage pipes have been installed around the badly polluted areas.
What are the issues with waste pollution in Rio
The worst waste problems are in the favelas, many a built on steep slopes and have few proper roads for access meaning that waste collections can’t reach them. Waste is therefore dumped and pollute the water system this causes diseases like cholera and encourages rats
What is the solution to waste pollution in Rio
One solution is a power plant set up in the University of Rio would uses methane gas from rotting rubbish. It consumes 30 tons of rubbish today and produces enough electricity for 1000 homes
