What is in the north zone
In the North zone there is the city’s main industrial and port area, the cities International airport and Maracanä soccer stadium are here, an area of low quality housing and favelas, the location of the tujuca national park
What is in the west zone
In the west zone there is the Bara de tujca that has changed from a lower class area into a wealthy suburb with luxury apartments, shopping malls, recreational and tourist facilities. There is also the industrial area of campe Grande which has low quality housing and steelworks, the main Olympic stadium and competitors village is also located in this area.
What is in the south zone
In the south zone there is development after tunnels were cut through the mountains. There is also Rio‘s main tourist hotels and beaches such as copacabana and epanima. There is also a wealthy area dominated by luxury flats, it has the wealthiest district in the whole of south America. However it is overlooked by Roçhina largest favela in South America.
What is in the central zone
The Centro is the oldest part of the city with many historic buildings. The cities main shopping area is here and this area also has the financial centre with headquarters of petrobass and CVBB, Brazil is the largest oil and mining companies.
What is the population of Rio in 2014
Rio had a population of 6.5 million people in the city itself and 12.5 million in the surrounding area, the population is greater than London which has 8 million in the Greater London area.
Why has Rio grown
Rio has grown due to many factors most of these being push and pull factors mentioned earlier as well as major job opportunities for the poor and lucrative offers for migrants coming to Rio from different places. Rio has a very diverse racial population.
