improvements to surgery and listers work on antiseptics Flashcards
understand hoe there was improvement in surgery and how the use of antiseptics helped
what was lister put in charge of
trying to lower the amount of deaths after surgery
how did lister think we could lower deaths after surgery
the believed the death rate could be lowered if there was a greater emphasis on hygiene making the chances of infection lower
what and how did he realise could be used to kill microorganisms
lister read pasteurs work and realised that to treat the sewage they were using carbolic acid (killing the microorganisms responsible for the decay and smell) and relied that the smell if infected wounds and sewage is very similar, that made he wonder if carbolic acide could be used to prevent infection
what did lister do to the 11 year old boy with a broken leg
the boy was brought to the hospital was his leg bone sticking out the normal presider would be to amputate to prevent infection but lister wanted to try something new. he set the bone and then covered it with bandages that had been soaked in the carbolic acid to see if it would heal without infection
what did he then start to do
lister started to use the solution of carbolic acid to clean wounds, equipment and bandages
what happened after he stared to disinfect everything
the number of deaths dropped dramatically
why was it called antiseptics
because the word to fight - anti and infection = septics
what did lister come up with for in surgery
he invented a spray that would spray the solution on the hands and tools
why did surgeons not like the spray
it would make their tools slippery making it harder to make cuts
