Impression Materials Flashcards
What are 3 classifications of impression materials?
Non elastic
Elastic hydrocolloids
Elastic elastomers
What is two examples of non elastic impression materials?
Compound
ZOE
What are two examples of elastic hydrocolloids?
Agar
Alginate
What are 3 examples of elastic elastomers?
Addition silicones (PVS, light, med body)
Polyethers (impregum)
Condensation silicones
What are the ideal properties of an impression material?
Biocompatible
Non irritant, non toxic
Acceptable taste and smell
100% elastic recovery
accurate surface detail reproduction
elastic
operator convenient - easy to use and mix
unaffected by moisture
What is alginate?
Elastic hydrocolloid that is used to take impressions for primary imps for dentures or to take imps for study casts
What are some advantages of alginate?
Cheap
Fast setting time
Can adjust setting time
Relatively good surface detail reproduction
elastic properties so can be used in undercuts
What are some disadvantages of alginate?
Mucocompressive - not good if flabby ridge etc
Not accurate enough for imps for cornws/bridges
poor dimensional stability
poor tear resistance
What is alginate composed of?
Sodium alginate
Silicate powder
Calcium phosphate
Colours
Flavours
What is impression compound?
Non elastic impression material used in edentulous cases along with green stick to get accurate impression of the ridge
it is mucocompressive
What is impression compound made of?
Resin
Wax
Filler
What are advantages of compound?
Mucocompressive - good impression in edentulous pt
can alter setting time
What are advantages of compound?
Mucocompressive - good impression in edentulous pt
can alter setting timeW
What are disadvanatges of compound?
Rigid - avoid deep undercuts
Poor dimensional stability
mucocompressive so poor on flabby ridges
poor reproduction of surface detail
What is polyether?
This is an elastic elastomer and example is impregum
