Denture Base Material Flashcards
What are ideal properties of denture base material?
Low weight
Good aesthetics
Easy to repair
High strength
High resistance to fracture
dimensionally stable
unaffected by oral mucosa
radiopaque
high impact strength
high hardness
non toxic
non irritant
What can happen when acrylic dentures are dropped if they dont fracture?
Microcracks can form in acrylic when overtime eventually leads to fracture
What is denture acrylic composed of?
Powder
Liquid
What is the powder composed of? denture
Initiator = benzoyl peroxide
PMMA particles
Plasticier
Pigments
Copolymers
What is the liquid composed of? denture?
Methacyrlate monomer (dissolve the PMMA)
Hydroquinione - to prolong shelf life
copolymers
How does denture base material form?
Via free radical addition polymerisation reaction involved:
activation
initiation
propogation
termination
Describe PMMA reaction
The methacrylate monomer undergoes free radical addition polymerisation
ACTIVATION- Initiator(BENZOYL PEROXIDE) activates to provide free radicals
INITIATION - free radicals break the carbon to carbon bond in the monomer
propagation - formation of growing polymer chain
termination = rxn ends
What is initiator activated by?
Heat >72 or by self cure to produce free radicals which react with monomer and break carbon to carbon bonds
What faults can occur during production of acrylic?
Contraction porosity
Gaseous porosity
Crazing
Granular porosity
What is contraction porosity?
This is where too much monomer and insufficient excess material which causes polymerisation shrinkage
What is gaseous porosity?
This is where monomer is bolling (100) - it has been heated too quickly
What is granular porosity?
This is where there is not enough monomer and too much polymer
What ifs crazing\?
This is where it is cooled too quickly leading to internal stresses
What are some properties of acrylic?
Dimesionally accurate and stable
non toxic and non irriated
unaffected by oral mucosa
poor mechanical properties (need to inc bulk to compensate)
High hardness srength
good thermal expansion
poor thermal conductivity
low density but inc bulk means its higher density
