Prince Henry “The Navigator”
Portuguese navigator that founded the school of Navigation. He aptured North African Port of Ceuta from the Muslims (1415). Sponsored a navigational school in Lisbon and sponsored expeditions to find a route to India around Africa
Vasco de Gama
First to reach the coast of India (1498). Used cannons and squadrons to defeat Arab fleets.
Ferdinand Magellan
1519 circumnavigated the globe, first European to sail through the Pacific Ocean. He died in the Philippines;
Bartholemew Diaz
- Portuguese explorer
* rounded the southern tip of Africa in 1488 “Cape of good hope”
Bartholemew De Las Casas
Spanish Priest and former conquistador whose father has accompanied Columbus on his second voyage. His writings helped spread the “black legend”, advocated for the rights of the Native Americans in the New World. He was known as “the protector of the natives”.
Amerigo Vespucci
Discovered that Columbus had found a new continent, not Asia. The Americas are named after him.
Jacob Fugger
a part of a German family that was a historically prominent group of European bankers. They are said to have had more wealth than the Medici.
Francisco Pizarro

Went to New World with 180 men with guns, horses, steel weapons. Mostly successful because the Incan population was infected with smallpox.
-Captured Atahualpa and killed (one of the sons)
-Seized Cuzco (capital); aided by Incan allies; made Lima the capital for a new colony of Spanish Empire
Hernan Cortes
Conquered the Aztec empire (1519-1521)
- Went to Tenochtitlan; made alliances with people who didn’t like the oppressive rule of the Aztecs
- Moctezuma= Aztec monarch; thought Cortes was sent by their god; he offered gifts of gold to Cortes and gave them a palace to stay.
- Cortes took Moctezuma hostage; pillaged the city; 1 year later = city revolted; Spanish died but smallpox killed most of the natives

Spanish conquerors, they brought diseases to the Americas.
John Cabot
A French sailor working for the English. the English realized they wanted to start making money too, so they hire more explorers and started the British East India Company.
Christopher Columbus
An Italian explorer who sailed for Portugal. He literally unearthed the country from poverty and jump-started the exploration movement.
