Anaesthesia

Antiseptics

-Ignaz Semmel-Weiss discovered that infections in the obstetrics unit following childbirth were most likely due to poor hand-washing by physicians
In the late 1860s, Joseph Lister helped greatly to reduce the rate of death from gangrene by dipping bandages and ligatures into carbolic acid and pouring the acid into the wounds to sterilise them

This marked the start of antiseptic surgery

inventions came enabling physicians to observe the body in a non-intrusive manner
These included:

Q

what else arised in technology

A

Artificial organs
- the poor availability of organs for transplant has encouraged the development of artificial organs.
The artificial kidney (for use in haemodialysis) was invented in 1913, allowing life prolongation for patients with kidney failure. Artificial hearts were first implanted in 1982.

Prosthetics

Computers

17
Q

a better understanding of the immune system

A

the identification of the HIV virus in the 1980s brought the science of immunology back to the fore

The HIV virus destroys the immune system and therefore the body’s ability to respond to threats

There is now a range of treatments that help patients reach a normal life expectancy
AIDS is no longer a death sentence

18
Q

a rise in genetics

A

the vast majority of the progress made in immunological and viral studies is due to a new understanding of genetics

cracking the genetic code has enabled the introduction of testing for diseases caused by defective chromosomes such as cystic fibrosis

It has enabled the creation of new drugs derived from natural body chemicals such as insulin and human growth hormone
