Important Cytokines Flashcards
IL-1
Causes fever, acute inflammation
Activates endothelium to express adhesion molecules
Induces chemokine secretion to recruit WBCs
Secreted by macrophages
IL-6
Stimulates production of acute-phase proteins (C-reactive protein, complement, etc.)
Secreted by macrophages
IL-8
Major chemotactic factor for neutrophils
Secreted by macrophages
IL-12
Induces differentiation of T cells into Th1 cells
Activates NK cells
Secreted by macrophages
TNF-alpha
Mediates septic shock
Activates endothelium
Causes WBC recruitment, vascular leak
Secreted by macrophages
IL-2
Stimulates growth of helper, cytotoxic and regulatory T cells (and NK cells)
Secreted by T cells
IL-3
Stimulates bone marrow growth and differentiation
Secreted by T cells
Interferon-y (IFN-y)
Stimulates macrophages to kill phagocytosed pathogens
Secreted by Th1 cells
IL-4
Stimulates IgE production (and IgG)
Induces differentiation into Th2 cells
Secreted by Th2 cells
IL-5
Stimulates eosinophils
Stimulates IgA production
Secreted by Th2 cells
IL-10
Calms down the immune system (along with TGF-beta)
Decreases expression of MHC class II and Th1 cytokines Inhibits activated macrophages and dendritic cells
Secreted by Th2 cells
