defintion of ICD
a self contained device similar to a pacemaker that monitors heart rhythm and an electric shock to correct life threatening arrhythmia
These re-cord details of cardiac electrical activity and device activity.
Indications for ICD
establishing an arrhythmic origin or symptoms
arrhythmias come and go so may be missed - if feel missing a paroxysmal arrhythmia ICD can record electrical activity over a longer period
complications of ICD
related to surgery - bleeding, infection, pneumothorax
after surgery - lead complications eg dislodgement/lead fracture = loss of effectiveness or inappropriate shocks
Movement of the ICD generator out of its proper position, which can cause pain, skin erosion or bleeding
Inappropriate shocks, which cause pain, and can produce psychological trauma.
ICD malfunction.
