DC cardioversion Flashcards
definition of DC cardioversion
restoration of normal heart rhythm in pts with tachyarrhythmia
application of controlled shock synchronised with R wave of ECG through electrodes placed on chest wall of an anaesthetised patient
indications for DC cardioversion
restore sinus rhythm if VF/VT; AF, flutter, or supraventricular tachy-cardias if other treatments have failed, or there is haemodynamic compromise
may be emergency
aim is to completely depolarise the heart using a direct current
complications of DC cardioversion
if inadvertently teh shock is delivered at the peak of the T wave it can cause v tachy
blood clot in heart could move to other perts of body
bruising/burning/pain at areas where electrodes are placed
worsening of the arrhythmia
other people may be shocked
