Impetigo
An epidermal bacterial blistering skin infection on the surface of the skin that is extremely contagious
Who is most at risk?
Children between the ages of 2-6, especially during summer months
Why are children most at risk?
They are more active and are prone to bumps and scrapes of their skin, decreasing skin integrity and allowing the bacteria in. Close proximity also increases risk.
What are the most common sites affected?
The face; mouth and nose, and upper limbs; hands, arms and legs
What are the two most common types of bacteria?
Staphylococcus aureus and streptococcus pyogenes
Symptoms
Red sores, oozing sores, yellow brown crust
Treatment
Antibiotics, keep hands clean, avoid contamination and keep sores clean and dry
