What is isolationism?
The belief that a nations should stay out the business of other countries.
The US does not believe in isolationism and buts into other country’s business all the time.
What is militarism?
The rapid buildup of military power.
There was a growing militarism as countries got ready for the war.
What is alliance system?
Countries agree to defend each other or work towards a common goal.
The thought of war made the countries nervous so they created an alliance system to help defend each other.
What is mobilization?
Gathering resources and troops to get ready for war.
Mobilization for war affected every part of American life.
Why did the US think it was time to start expanding their territory and power?
Some wanted to expand so that they could become one of the worlds great powers. They wanted to add more land and trade with other countries. They could also have a stronger navy if they had bases in other countries. Some also thought that they should spread their religion.
Why did the US want to acquire Alaska?
To add more land to become more powerful. It was purchased from Russia for $7.2 million. Many people thought Alaska was just an icy place but after gold was discovered they decided it was a good idea to buy it.
Why did the US want Hawaii?
The US wanted Hawaii so that they could build a trading empire in the pacific. It would be a stopping place for ships going to China. American planters took control of Hawaii from the queen and asked the US to annex it. Most native Hawaiians were against it because they wanted to keep control of their land.
What was the significance of the Zimmerman telegram?
It was a secret telegram that the British got that was sent to Mexico from the Germans. It offered an alliance with Mexico to fight with them against the US if the Americans entered the war. This made the Americans mad and was one of the reasons they entered the war.
Explain 2 reasons the why the US decided to enter the war.
The US entered the war to defend its rights and stay a world power. Germany was attacking and sinking American merchants ships and killing people. Americans could not get their goods to other countries to trade.
The Zimmerman telegram was sent to Mexico offering to fight with them against the Americans. This really made the Americans mad.
How did the US keep support for the war?
Women and minorities were important to the workforce. They filled the jobs of men in factories who want to fight the war.
The national War labor Board was created to make sure supplies and war materials were made.
The Food Administration planted Victory Gardens and had voluntary rationing to make sure that there was enough food.
The Committee on Public Information sent out pro-war pamphlets and gave new of the governments side of the war.
How did the government try to control public opinion?
The Sabotage and Sedition Acts made it a crime to say , print or write anything bad about the government or the war.
The Espionage Act gave strict punishment for spying.
Define imperialism
The policy of extending a nations rule over other territories and countries.
One of the things that caused WW2 was Japan insisting on imperialism.
