A

Some wanted to expand so that they could become one of the worlds great powers. They wanted to add more land and trade with other countries. They could also have a stronger navy if they had bases in other countries. Some also thought that they should spread their religion.

To add more land to become more powerful. It was purchased from Russia for $7.2 million. Many people thought Alaska was just an icy place but after gold was discovered they decided it was a good idea to buy it.

Why did the US want Hawaii?

A

The US wanted Hawaii so that they could build a trading empire in the pacific. It would be a stopping place for ships going to China. American planters took control of Hawaii from the queen and asked the US to annex it. Most native Hawaiians were against it because they wanted to keep control of their land.

What was the significance of the Zimmerman telegram?

A

It was a secret telegram that the British got that was sent to Mexico from the Germans. It offered an alliance with Mexico to fight with them against the US if the Americans entered the war. This made the Americans mad and was one of the reasons they entered the war.

Explain 2 reasons the why the US decided to enter the war.

A

The US entered the war to defend its rights and stay a world power. Germany was attacking and sinking American merchants ships and killing people. Americans could not get their goods to other countries to trade.

The Zimmerman telegram was sent to Mexico offering to fight with them against the Americans. This really made the Americans mad.

A

Women and minorities were important to the workforce. They filled the jobs of men in factories who want to fight the war.

The national War labor Board was created to make sure supplies and war materials were made.

The Food Administration planted Victory Gardens and had voluntary rationing to make sure that there was enough food.

The Committee on Public Information sent out pro-war pamphlets and gave new of the governments side of the war.
