Impacts Flashcards
Global Warming
Biodiversity Collapse and Extinction
1. millions of plant and animal species extinct by 2050 (Dr. Peter Barrett estimates humans extinct within 100 yrs if CO2 levels continue to rise at current levels)
2. Global Warming causes ocean acidification, warmer water kills phytoplankton. Extinction (generates 70% of Earth’s Oxygen, prevents CO2 from being converted which exponentially makes global warming worse)
Warming Impacts Happen First
1. Rise in Sea Level destroys miles of coastland for every millimeter. Icecaps/Glaciers can cause 20 ft of raised sea Level
2. Causes resource/land depletion, overcrowding, loss of seafood (main source of food for 3 billion people), global ecosystem
3. WHO estimates 250k deaths a year 2030-2050 bc of global warming
Dehumanization
Justifies Violence, war, death, human rights abuses
1. Japanese portrayed as rodents to American Media caused them to be bombed instead of Germany, the smart decision
2. Chattel slavery was largely accepted because non-Caucasian people were seen as livestock
Creates cyclic and expanding violence
1. 9/11 caused violence against Muslims to increase 1600%
2. Inherent barriers between groups. Russians accept war on Ukraine because they are seen as less than people. Means that the violence never stops
Democracy
Interdependence and Diplomatic Solutions
1. No two democracies have ever gone to war. Probability of war in democracies drops to nearly 0 percent within 5 years
2. Democratic failure creates war and expansionism. Autocratic regimes powergrabbing causes loss of resources, repression, and death/starvation of thousands
Civil Liberties and Human Rights
1. Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Taiwan have matched democratic creation with economic reform, lower poverty rates, public services, etc.
2. Democratization leads to improved government policies around health, raises higher health outcomes and lower child mortality
Nuclear War
Extinction
1. Launch of one attack breaks nuclear taboo and forces other countries to respond stronger, leading to a global war. CACNP cites there is no small nuclear war. 500 mil dead during initial nuclear exchange
2. Dust in atmosphere from bombs kills 5 billion people from starvation alone
3. Destroys the ozone layer, UVB and UVC radiation affecting life on Earth.
