German Crusade

A

Led by Henry VI (Frederick Barbarossa’s son) AND he went to built up territory in the Mediterranean and wanted to add this to lands in Outremer

PREPARATIONS:
1) He sent envoys to Constantinople demanding good roads, ports/ships and some Greek troops
2) Had a force of around 16,000 troops with 4000 knights

SUCESSES:
- He took Beirut and Sidon

FAILURES:
- Al-Adil swiftly took Jaffa upon hearing of the crusade
- Bohemond of Antioch lost his gains of Latakia & Jabala to muslims

Teutonic Knights founded in 1190

Germans, under Frederick of Swabia founded a hospital

Due to so many Germans being ill –> this hospital then took on military character and became the Hospital of St. Mary of Teutons of Jerusalem
