Political - Small governments ruling over independent kingdoms, use of traditions and unwritten laws to keep order, massive decrease in the number of people living in cities, people depended on wealthy land owners for protection

Economic - Lack of widespread trade, creation of large estates known as manors that were self-sufficient, bartering and the exchange of services for protection/goods

Cultural - Formal education ceases to exist, few people know how to read or write, few ideas are shared among different groups as people become isolated
