Impact of Migration and Empire on Scotland's Development Flashcards
Empire : Springburn in Glasgow made railway lines and cars which were sent to India and the Canadian Pacific railway.
This boosted the economy in Springburn providing employment since in 1914 ¼ of the world’s railway carriages were made there.
Empire : Many Scots with entrepreneurial spirit left Scotland to go to the Empire, where they were very successful. Eg. J McArthur introduced the Merino sheep to Australia.
Tom Devine argues this caused a brain drain as Scotland lost her most gifted and talented.
Empire : Scots protecting the Empire were seen as a symbol of pride and young men were attracted to join in large numbers.
This impacted on Scotland because martial tradition gained pride and the reserve forces at home took on the same rank structures as the famous regiments.
Empire : The Empire provided countries which traded with Scotland. Goods were taken to and from the Empire by ship. The Navy needed ships to defend the Empire.
This created a boom for the shipbuilding industry which was required to make these ships, nearly ¼ of all the world’s ships were made on the clyde. This also helped iron, coal and steel prosper
Empire : Jute was produced in India. This came as a raw material to Scotland.
Dundee became known as ‘jutopolis’ because it grew rich on using the jute to create uniforms and sandbags which were exported around the world.
Migration : Irish came over and worked as navvies, building canals, roads and railways.
This was vital to the success of the industrial revolution to have the means to move materials and goods
Migration : Italians set up chip shops and ice cream parlours.
Established café culture in Scotland and improved working class diet with nourishing meal from fish and chips
Migration : Many Irish joined trade unions and in particular joined the Labour party.
This influenced politics, especially Irishman J Wheatley who was responsible for the Wheatly housing act after WW1 to build ½ million affordable homes.
Migration : Jews arriving in Scotland set up cigarette factories
This had a positive impact on Scotland’s economy because it created jobs.
Migration : Catholic Irish arriving in Scotland set up Celtic football clubs and their own schools. Protestants in Scotland set up the Orange Order as a defence for Protestantism against Catholicism.
This impacted Scotland by creating sectarianism, a divide over religion which permeated all aspects of life especially sports.
